A City Made of Small Worlds
A sample observation about New York, repetition, and how a place becomes personal.

New York is too large to know as a whole, so eventually everybody invents a smaller city inside it.
Mine is made of repeated walks, the counter seat I hope is open, the station exit that saves three minutes, friends’ apartments, music heard through a wall, and people I recognize without knowing.
Travel makes a place feel vivid because nothing has become background yet. Living somewhere asks for a different skill: recovering the foreground after habit has flattened it.
A field note, not a conclusion
I want to write down more of these small worlds—the particular places that make an enormous city feel briefly legible.
Not as a guide to the best of New York. “Best” is usually too blunt. More like a record of where attention has accumulated, and what became meaningful through return.
